Reading

We encourage you all to keep reading with your child, every day! Choosing books that are a good fit and interesting to your child is important. Talk about the pictures in the story, make predictions and ask questions.  Reading should be fun!  We suggest 20 minutes of reading every day.

Writing

We encourage you to have your child write every day. There is so much happening in their little lives right now, an easy idea might be to have them just journal about their feelings, what they're observing, what they are doing each day. We do this lots at school. As a parent you can help with sounding out, punctuation, capitalization, sight words should be spelled correctly.

  • Create a book- staple some pages together and let them create a book.  Encourage them to draw pictures to go along with their story. Then share their story with a loved one.
  • Write a letter to someone- choose a family member, a friend, or even a teacher!  Write them a letter and send them a picture of it.
  • Movie review- sit down as a family and watch a favourite movie. When the movie is finished, have your student write about their favourite parts, their least favourite parts and for fun, maybe even do a "spoiler alert".

Word Work

Sight word mastery is important for your child’s success as a reader. Many sight words cannot be sounded out (decoded). Therefore, they must be memorized. Sight words also represent some of the most common words in written language. Students will encounter them over and over on a daily basis, so mastery of them will aid students in fluent reading.  Below, you will find games and activities to help your child practice reading and spelling these sight words.
